Re: Text column support for UTF-8, UTF-16 and other multi-byte text encodings (variable width encodings)

Self-synchronizing properties of UTF-8 (and lack of it in UTF-16) UTF-8 is self-synchronizing at byte-level. UTF-16 is not self-synchronizing at byte-level, but at code-unit-level (i.e., UInt16 units). Here is a simple example of this issue for UTF-16LE (assuming a file made of 4 bytes, given in he...

Re: "Abstract Error" when pressing "Next Array Item" with custom data type selected in the Data Inspector

I replied to you about the plugin and some implementation issues by mail.

Regarding your bug report, indeed there is an error in HxD, I am investigating it right now.

Re: Some ideas for user experience improving view settings

Thanks for your mockups and suggestions :) Regarding the zero-byte ghosting I am not sure if I would implement it. The plan currently is to add support for structure views and UTF-8 text display, the latter of which would require redoing the drawing code quite a bit. Splitting up based on values wou...

Re: search with unknown hex?

There is no such option yet, I am afraid, but there is a feature request for a more extended search already.

Re: Default column view

There is no such feature currently and there are many features waiting to be implemented.

So unless something needs to be clarified, there is usually no reason to comment on a FR, since it shows when a post is public (i.e., when it was submitted successfully :)).

Re: Error when writing to disk end

However HxD version 1.7.7.0 does not have any problems writing at the end of these disks. In that case it is probably an issue with unmounting logical drives on the physical disk. A range problem is unlikely, since HxD works with 64 bit integers, and it works under 1.7.7.0. Did it mention that unmo...

Error when writing to disk end

hxddiskwriteerror.png Writing to the end of a 4 TiB disk causes a write errror (which might be normal), but the stream exception message dialog indicates at least another mistake. The error message translates to: Can't open the drive "\\.\PhysicalDrive0" for writing. System error. Code: 2. Can't fi...

Re: File exists on drive, but contents doesn't show up hex editor

If you created the disk image using HxD and it has the right size (same as your imaged hard disk), then it should contain the string.

It might be that the file was compressed or encrypted, though, so the raw disk dump and the file would not contain the same raw data.

Re: PropEdit Integration ?

That's a good suggestion.

I planned to do it some day as part of the structure editor, which would be more generic, but is a larger project.

Re: what happens when usng open disk feature

Are the disks the same size in dd and HxD (the amount of sectors matter)?

Re: Is it possible?

In theory everything is possible with a hex editor, if you know the file format, and it isn't encrypted. Interpreting a random file format without significant time investment is not possible, though. If you have the device, a good option is to compare changes in recorded GPS data, using a file compa...

Re: Not necessary: Context Menu

Thanks.

But, what's wrong with the context menu setting in the options dialog?
It doesn't seem to do anything that can't be done through it.

Re: Paste/Write Hex (not characters)

If you paste data in the hex column, the characters in the clipboard will be interpreted like a sequence of bytes (one hex pair per byte).

If you paste data in the text column, it will be pasted as is.

Does that solve your problem?

Re: Translation software

Thanks for your offer to translate. I finally got the translation form the current PT-BR translator, which I will publish with the next minor release.
If any help is needed in future, I'll contact you again :)
