"hide file extension" needs to be checked or un-checked?

i never had to add .bin at the end of edited files in HxD before .. this just started happing 3 months ago. i been using HxD for 5 years.

why do i have to add .bin to a already .bin extension that i am editing ?

i am trying to download older version . for example 2.2 or 2.1 but download link keeps sending me to version 2.5.
i want to try older version see if that fix the issue

Is it a new issue since you updated HxD, or with the same version? In the latter case, I think it's related to some virus scanner.

i dont have virus software. just the windows defender. its been happening for 3 months now. i just finally got tired of it. came here to look for solution. i uninstalled HxD 2.4.. rebooted pc .. installed HxD 2.5. same problem. i will try turning off virus . see if that helps.
