There are no special file types for a hex-editor, it considers every file just as raw data, i.e. you see every byte, there is no special interpretation, opposed to e.g. a image editor.

To save a file specify the full name, if you want to save it as exe just append .exe to the filename. Naturally the content of the file must be a valid executable, appending .exe is not enough.

There is no special 'hxd document', choose any name you see fit. Some examples: file.raw, file.bin, file.dat
