I'm aware of the bookmarking feature but that's not what I need here.
I just need to be able to select n number of bytes and be able to set their foreground and/or background color via a simple color selector. It really doesn't need to be more than that.
I can, of course, think of all kinds of nifty additional features and functions and bells and whistles and gizmos that could accompany this one, but the rest is merely a nice-to-have compared to just being able to highlight bytes to separately identify various sections and data markers. I would never want for another hex tool if HxD had this one simple feature.

Re: Simple "highlight selected bytes" feature
To clarify when I say select n number of bytes, I mean physically just using the mouse to select some arbitrary bytes to highlight just like you would use the mouse to select words in a paragraph in a document to highlight.

+1 Interest to this proposed feature. Bookmarking is nice for big chunks of data, but drawing the eye to specific bytes via highlighting would be great!
