HxD: "Apply changes immediately" in Fill Selection

Post by Roman »

Hi,

Just found this excellent program and thought I could use it to wipe my HDD before selling it. Unfortunately there's no easy way of doing that - when I Select All and Fill Selection, I get an "out of memory" error.

I guess what happens is that HxD tries to keep track of all the 120 GB of random data it generates for the HDD without saving it - which is never going to work :)

Did I miss something or is there really no easy way of doing this currently? If so, I'd like to suggest adding a checkbox called "Apply changes immediately" to the Fill Selection dialog, which would cause HxD to perform the selection fill immediately, flushing the data as it goes. I.e., if checked, there will be no unsaved changes pending at the end of the fill operation.

Thanks for the program, love it!

Hello,

You are right there is no (easy) way to wipe the disk if it is larger than a certain amount (free RAM). I will look into a way of adding a direct write option, maybe this will also be added as a special disk tool.
